ACReSAL Empowering Community Leaders on Climate Change
The Agro-climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes Project (ACReSAL), focused on bolstering agro-climate resilience in semi-arid landscapes, has concluded its two-day enlightenment workshop and interactive session on climate change for community leaders and stakeholders in Adamawa state.
During the event held on the 13th and 14th of October, 2023 at the Muna Hotels Conference Hall in Yola, the Commissioner Min. Of Environment Adamawa state, Mohammed Sadiq, commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his environmentally conscious policies.
“These Trees serves as our shield, which produces clean oxyen that we do enhale so as to stay alife.Without these oxygen, we would definitely be in trouble, and thats why the government have seen it deem to create awareness and impliment policies that would save our communities from further destruction.” [translated from Hausa]
Sadiq highlighted on the restoration of monthly sanitation, which would occurring every last Saturday of the month, by the Fintiri administration in Adamawa.
He also emphasized the ban on tree cutting due to its societal hazards, along with efforts in afforestation and environmental protection.
Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Environment at the State House of Assembly, Mr. Kefas Kelvin, affirmed the readiness of the house to enact laws safeguarding the environment. Mr. Kelvin, representing Toungo, urged participants to engage with the program earnestly for the collective benefit.
Senior Special Adviser to Adamawa state Governor on Environment, Alh. Usman Yahaya Diyajo, explained that ACReSAL was established in collaboration with the World Bank. Alh. Bashiru Sa’idu Lawan, District Head of Bazza, expressed his commitment to supporting government initiatives in environmental awareness and protection. He criticized those who undermine government efforts.
The program’s theme is “Trees and Humility; the need for urgent Action on Building Sustainable Ecosystems”. ACReSAL’s mission and vision address environmental challenges stemming from climate and landscape practices in Northern Nigeria, aiming for robust policies on ecological restoration and climate-resilient communities.
The sensitization workshop will conclude on Saturday, 14th October 2023.
Dr. Ibrahim Chinda, Project Coordinator for the state Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes Project (ACReSAL), announced that the Adamawa State Government has initiated a two-day sensitization and interactive workshop on climate change for 250 traditional rulers in the state. Dr. Chinda stated that the training serves as a train-the-trainers program, with participants expected to disseminate knowledge gained from the workshop to their subjects.
He emphasized that Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s administration places significant emphasis on environmental issues, making it a pivotal aspect of the government’s 11-point agenda.
Commissioner for Environment, Malam Mohammed Sadeeq, elucidated that ACReSAL’s mission is to tackle environmental challenges arising from climate change and inadequate land use practices in Northern Nigeria. He stressed the aspiration for standardized practices and policies in ecological restoration, as well as the establishment of climate-resilient communities.
Experts specializing in environmental issues and climate change are scheduled to deliver insightful presentations on the subject.
