Adamawa State Launches Urgent Mass Cattle Vaccination to Combat Deadly Disease
The Adamawa State Government has initiated a mass vaccination campaign for cattle to combat Hemorrhagic Septicaemia, a deadly disease that recently claimed over 1,000 cattle in neighbouring Taraba State.
Led by Alhaji Tijjani Marksha, Commissioner for Livestock and Aquaculture, the campaign aims to prevent the disease from spreading into Adamawa State. The vaccination effort began in Gongoshi, Mayo Belwa Local Government, where hundreds of cattle have already been vaccinated.
The Commissioner praised the high level of compliance from cattle rearers and commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his swift action.
Aminu Mohammed Suleiman, Permanent Secretary, noted that the disease causes symptoms such as sweating and fever and can kill cattle within 24 hours. He urged residents to report any suspected cases to local veterinary clinics or the ministry.
Dr. Berthilimous Nyalas, Director of State Veterinary Services, outlined the targeted local governments for the first phase of the vaccination. These include Numan, Demsa, Lamurde, Mayo Belwa, Toungo, Fufore, Maiha, Mubi North, and Mubi South. These areas were chosen due to their proximity to Taraba State and the Cameroun Republic.
Ardo Kwanan Lauje, Gonhoshi Ardo Abfu Gajere, expressed gratitude to Governor Fintiri for the government’s proactive support, stating that this is the first time such aid has been provided without a prior request.
