Cleantech Nonprofit Earthshot Announces Gaming Collaboration with Tradewater to Drive Awareness Around Orphaned Gas Wells and Old Refrigerant Canisters

Tradewater Earthshot Parkour lets players race to plug wells and collect canisters in a custom Fortnite Island
June 4, 2024 – Los Angeles—Today, Earthshot, a disruptive 501c3 non-profit inspiring climate change action, and Tradewater, a B Corp and climate project developer, announced the launch of Tradewater Earthshot Parkour, a new interactive island created in Fortnite designed to drive engagement and education about the climate dangers posed by orphaned gas wells and old refrigerant canisters around the world. Tradewater Earthshot Parkour challenges players in a race against the clock to plug wells and collect canisters across the island while learning about Tradewater’s initiatives to find and destroy the most potent greenhouse gasses before they are released into the atmosphere.
Fortnite players can visit Tradewater Earthshot Parkour today using island code 7398-2226-8805.
There are an estimated one million orphaned and two million abandoned oil & gas wells in the U.S. Many are actively leaking methane – emissions that total the equivalent of 1.7 million cars. Around the world there are 18 gigatons of refrigerants in the world that would fill 600 million 30 lb canisters.
Since 2016, Tradewater has worked with individuals, organizations and governments worldwide to find, measure and safely prevent the release of the world’s most potent greenhouse gasses. Through working with Earthshot, Tradewater is able to educate and engage gen Z gamers, while drawing crucial attention towards the company’s real world efforts to prevent over 22 million tons of CO2 equivalent from being released into the atmosphere by 2027.
“In just eight years, Tradewater has permanently prevented the release of 7.5 million tons of CO2e, the equivalent of over 14.2 million barrels of oil,” said Tim Brown, founder and CEO of Tradewater. “ We are thrilled to be able to sponsor this interactive gaming experience as part of our efforts to engage and educate the public in a fun way about a very serious issue.”
“My kids and I had such a blast playing the island together and if it was boring, I would not have sparked the conversations we had about the important work I do at Tradewater. It’s a cool and innovative way to meet people where they’re at, especially young people. Not only does this game highlight the problems with leaking orphaned wells and refrigerants, but it shows that there are people in the real world actually doing something to stop it.” -Sean Kinghorn, Market Development Strategist at Tradewater
