Overview of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots

The Embassy of Japan in Uganda is accepting applications for the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects program, which provides financial assistance to non-profit, development-oriented organizations to implement community development projects that directly benefit people at the grassroots level.

Project Focus Areas

  • Any project aimed at improving grassroots welfare is considered for funding under the GGP plan, provided it is socially and environmentally sound. However, the projects listed below are preferable.
  • Primary/secondary education.
  • Vocational Training
  • Primary Healthcare and Reproductive Health
  • Freshwater & Sanitation
  • Agricultural Development
  • Reconstruction of disaster areas
  • Particular emphasis will be placed on catastrophe reconstruction and projects aimed at assisting the most vulnerable groups, such as women, children, and individuals with disabilities.

Eligible Projects

The GGP plan can fund the following projects.

  • Construction of structures/facilities (e.g., a school building, a water tank, and so on)
  • Provision of equipment and materials (e.g., medical equipment for a health centre, training equipment/materials for a vocational school, etc.)
  • Technical or instructional training/workshops to supplement the preceding a) and/or b) activities (for example, technical training on how to use provided equipment/materials, etc.); However, GGP cannot sponsor programs that focus solely on training/workshops.

Eligibility Criteria

A non-profit organization with:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in implementing grassroots development projects,
  • Full-time salaried employees and
  • legal status is qualified to apply for the GGP.
  • International or local non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
  • CBOs
  • Medical Schools
  • Educational institutions (e.g., government-funded primary and secondary schools)
  • Local administrations or governments

Ineligible

  • Individuals
  • Private businesses (including private schools)
  • Higher education institutions (including research institutes)
  • Institutions directly connected to the central government

Conditions for Accessing GGP Grants

  • Legal Status: The applicant organisation must be registered with NGO authorities/boards or any other applicable authority (e.g., EMIS, MOH, local government) and carry out some activities.
  • Experience, Performance, and Capacity: The applicant organisation must have shown capacity and experience, as well as competent and experienced staff, to carry out the planned project. Annual and financial reports for the previous two (2) years are required as part of the GGP application materials.
  • Project Scope and Feasibility: The proposed project must fall within the GGP areas, and the applicant must have completed necessary preliminary activities (e.g., baseline surveys, feasibility studies, situational analysis, etc.).
  • Sustainability: The proposed project should have a clear strategy for ongoing operations throughout and after the GGP-funded implementation phase.
  • Contributions from the Applicant: Applicants are highly encouraged to demonstrate their contribution plan to the project, whether in the form of money, labour, supplies, or any other way.
