Lakeland Dairies to Close Three Sites, Cutting 78 Jobs
Lakeland Dairies is closing down three places where they make things, and this means they have to let go of 78 people who work there.
The group that owns the company said that they’re sorry, but they have to do this to make their new plan work better. They want to make the way they do things more efficient.
Lakeland Dairies said that by early 2025, they’ll make some big changes in how they do things. They’re going to do this to match what people want in the future.
The bosses at Lakeland Dairies have agreed to stop working in three places: two in Monaghan and one in Down. This is part of their plan to do things better.
The group that owns the company said that they’re sad that they have to let some people go because of their new plan. They think 78 people might lose their jobs because of this.
One of their places in Monaghan will close in early 2025 because they want to start a big project. They’ll move making liquid milk to another place called Lakeland Dairies Killeshandra, and the other things they do with a lot of milk will happen at other Lakeland Dairies places.
Another place, Lough Egish in Monaghan, will stop drying milk in June 2024, but they’ll still do other things with milk there. The place in Banbridge, Down, will also close then. They haven’t been using it to process milk directly for a while; instead, they’ve been doing other things like making butter and packing and storing powder.
After they close, Lakeland Dairies wants to sell these places in Monaghan and Banbridge.
The boss of Lakeland Dairies, Colin Kelly, said that their company is in good shape. Lots of milk comes from 3,200 farms to them, but things will change in the next ten years. They won’t focus only on getting a lot of milk; they want to make more valuable things from it.
He said,
“We do appreciate that this announcement creates uncertainty for our colleagues and their families. We will work closely with them and support them throughout this process in which they will continue to be treated fairly and with respect.”
The company said that they might offer some people different jobs if there are openings in the company. They’ve started talking with the workers and their groups about this.
The rest of the Lakeland Dairies staff, around 1,300 people, won’t be affected by this news.
A government official, Heather Humphreys, said it’s sad to hear about people losing their jobs. She promised to help them with new opportunities and training.
“Lakeland Dairies is a very important employer in my own home County of Monaghan and throughout the border region. Any decision by such a company to make staff redundant is deeply disappointing,” she said.
“Social protection officials will engage directly with the company and ensure all available supports are put in place, including opportunities to retrain and reskill,” she added.
