National Park Service Commits to Carbon Reduction Efforts in Nigeria

The commitment of the National Park Service (NPS) to carbon reduction efforts in Nigeria marks a significant stride towards mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Dr. Ibrahim Goni, the Conservator-General of the NPS, emphasized this dedication during a seminar organized by the Environmental Media Correspondents Association of Nigeria in Abuja.

The establishment of 10 new national parks across the country is poised to play a pivotal role in carbon reduction.

Dr. Goni elucidated,

“The seven national parks provides a total area of vegetation of 20,000 square kilometres and we are confident that it would sequestrate carbon by 4.8 million parts this means that with the introduction of the new 10 national parks carbon dioxide is going to be sequestrated.”

This initiative reflects a proactive approach towards combating climate change, aligning with global efforts to address this pressing issue.

In addition to the commendable efforts of the NPS, Dr. Goni urged local residents to actively engage in afforestation initiatives.

This call to action is particularly crucial in areas where lands have been adversely affected by erosion, as reclamation efforts through afforestation can help restore ecological balance and prevent further degradation.

Furthermore, Dr. Goni lauded the Federal Government for its steadfast commitment to carbon mitigation.

The ambitious goal of planting 25 million trees serves as a testament to the government’s dedication to mitigating the impacts of climate change in Nigeria.

This initiative not only contributes to carbon sequestration but also fosters a culture of environmental stewardship among the populace.

The NPS has made commendable progress in its conservation efforts and natural resource management. In 2020, the Federal Government granted approval for the establishment of 10 new national parks.

This milestone received unanimous approval from the 9th Assembly, and the NPS now eagerly anticipates the official gazette from the Federal Ministry of Justice.

Once the gazette is issued, the NPS will take charge of these designated areas and officially designate them as national parks. This development signifies a significant expansion of protected areas, further enhancing conservation efforts across the country.

The strategic placement of the 10 new national parks is designed to maximize their impact on conservation and carbon reduction.

These parks are distributed across various states, including Alawa National Park in Niger, Apoi National Park, Edumenun National Park in Bayelsa, Galgore National Park in Kano State, and Hadejia Wetland National Park in Jigawa.

Additionally, Kempe National Park in Kwara, Kogo National Park in Katsina State, Marhi National Park in Nasarawa State, Oba Hill National Park in Osun, and Pandam National Park in Plateau will collectively contribute to the preservation and sustainable management of Nigeria’s rich natural heritage.

In conclusion, the unwavering commitment of the National Park Service to carbon reduction efforts demonstrates a proactive and forward-thinking approach towards addressing climate change in Nigeria.

Through the establishment of new national parks and the engagement of local communities in afforestation initiatives, the NPS is paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.

This collective effort, supported by the Federal Government’s initiatives, underscores the importance of environmental conservation and the role it plays in safeguarding the planet for future generations.
