Niger State Bolsters Agriculture with Delivery of 200 New Tractors
Niger State has expanded its agricultural capabilities with the arrival of 200 additional tractors from John Deere, enhancing its capacity for dry-season farming.
This new batch of tractors will augment the state’s farming equipment, increasing its capacity from 250,000 units used during the rainy season.
The state plans to cultivate rice, maize, millet, sorghum, and beans, with a target production of one million tonnes for the upcoming dry season.
The seeds for this season, which include hybrid varieties, have been procured by Niger Foods.
Furthermore, Bayer AG, a global leader in pharmaceuticals and agriculture, will supply additional seeds under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in April during the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C.
Governor Umar Bago of Niger State had previously secured a $650 million partnership with John Deere to support the state’s agricultural revolution. This initiative aims to prepare millions of hectares for farm estates.
In addition to the recent delivery, the state government has already received 500 large-capacity tractors, 500 harvesters, and 1,000 pieces of agricultural and irrigation equipment.
