Climate Change Expert Professor Richard Betts to Address Public Meeting in Wellington
Wellington residents are gearing up for an insightful discussion on climate change as renowned climate scientist Professor Richard Betts prepares to take the stage at a public meeting this Wednesday.
Organized by Stephen Tate, the town council’s Climate Change Project Officer, the event will be held at the United Reformed Church at 7 pm.
Professor Betts, recognized globally for his expertise in climate science spanning over three decades, will deliver a 30-minute talk focusing on the potential impacts of climate change on the geography of Somerset, particularly concerning rising sea levels.
Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in an hour-long question and answer session, offering a unique chance to delve deeper into climate-related issues.
Expressing his excitement about Professor Betts’ participation, Stephen Tate emphasized the significance of having such an esteemed expert share insights with the community.
“Richard is the real deal – we’re lucky to have him coming to Wellington. After the talk, you will be able to ask him anything on climate change,” Stephen remarked.
Professor Richard Betts – A Leader in Climate Science
Professor Richard Betts MBE holds distinguished positions as Head of Climate Impacts Research at the Met Office Hadley Centre and Chair in Climate Impacts at the University of Exeter.Throughout his illustrious career, he has authored approximately 180 scientific papers covering a wide array of climate change topics, ranging from heatwaves and droughts to wildfire and glacier melt.
Notably, Professor Betts has played pivotal roles in major reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), contributing significantly to global climate assessments.
His contributions extend beyond academia, as he served as the Technical Lead for the UK’s latest national climate change risk assessment and currently advises the UK’s Climate Change Committee as an Expert Advisor for the forthcoming risk assessment.
In recognition of his invaluable contributions to understanding climate change, Professor Betts was honored with an MBE in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
As a member of the Devon Climate Taskforce, he continues to provide guidance to Devon County Council in their efforts to combat climate change and foster sustainability.
