Record-Breaking £1.3 Million Legacy: Siblings’ Extraordinary Donation to Wales Air Ambulance Set to Save 280 Lives
In a poignant and philanthropic act, siblings Margaret Davies, affectionately known as Peggy, and her older brother Charles have bequeathed their substantial £1.3 million fortune to the Wales Air Ambulance, setting a record as the largest legacy ever received by the charity.
Their selfless gesture, born out of gratitude for the air ambulance’s crucial assistance after Charles’s tractor accident, will have a lasting impact, contributing to saving up to 280 lives through the charity’s vital missions.

Peggy, aged 89, passed away four months before her brother Charles, aged 92, marking a poignant moment in their shared journey.
The siblings, who spent their entire lives together on a remote farm in Corwen, Denbighshire, chose to support the Wales Air Ambulance, reflecting their deep appreciation for the service that once airlifted Charles to the hospital following a tractor mishap.
Their bond transcends the boundaries of mortality, as they are laid to rest side by side with an epitaph on their headstone, eloquently expressing their life philosophy: ‘Rhoi eu hoes if ffermio’n gymen, Rhoi eu helw i elusen’ – ‘They gave their lives to farming, they gave their profits to charity.’

This inscription beautifully encapsulates the essence of their existence, underscoring a commitment to both their livelihood and a profound sense of altruism.
Merfyn Roberts, a friend and executor, shared insights into Charles and Peggy’s unique personalities, recounting Charles’s visits adorned in yellow corduroy trousers and a dickie bow.
Charles, a ‘mischievous character,’ had a knack for striking deals, with Peggy pulling out a bag of money to seal agreements. Their charming eccentricities extended to purchasing a brand-new state-of-the-art Mercedes, doubling as a roost for chickens, showcasing their distinct style and comical nature.
Despite their idiosyncrasies, the Davies siblings were pillars of their community, known for their contributions to the local area. Charles worked for Denbighshire Council on highways, while Peggy managed farm responsibilities at home. Their generosity extended beyond their immediate surroundings, as they actively participated in driving the school taxi and engaging with the local community.

Peggy’s passing in November 2019 was followed by Charles’s demise four months later, both spending their final moments in Cysgod Y Gaer, a local nursing home.
Iolo Evans, the general manager of Corwen Farmers for over 50 years, fondly remembered Charles and Peggy as ‘different and very old-fashioned but likeable people.’
Their presence at his office, conducting unique transactions and sharing their distinct theories about the weather, left an indelible mark on those who encountered them.
Their legacy, a testament to their unconventional yet endearing characters, will extend far beyond their time on Earth.
Phae Jones, the charity’s senior individual giving and legacy manager, expressed gratitude for this extraordinary donation, describing it as ‘the largest legacy to have been left to the charity.’

While the Wales Air Ambulance never had the opportunity to meet Charles and Peggy, their legacy will perpetuate through the delivery of advanced critical care, impacting the lives of countless patients and their families.
Choosing to include the Wales Air Ambulance in their wills is a profoundly special way for Charles and Peggy to be remembered. Their generosity will ensure that their legacy lives on, making a tangible difference through the charity’s missions.

Over 280 patients and their families will be directly impacted by this extraordinary act of kindness, showcasing the enduring power of altruism and leaving an indelible mark on Wales.
The Davies siblings’ story serves as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact individuals can have through acts of kindness, even beyond their time on Earth. In celebrating their unique characters and philanthropic spirit, we are inspired to consider the profound influence our actions can have on the well-being of others and the communities we touch.
