The primary objective of this march was to raise consciousness among the populace about the profound repercussions of climate change on our environment. Furthermore, it sought to galvanise individuals to embrace sustainable practices that can effectively alleviate the adverse effects of this global phenomenon.

Embarking from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the procession traversed through the city, culminating at the Taraba State Government House. Here, the team was warmly welcomed by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji. Aminu Abdullahi Alkali, representing Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas.

He laid particular emphasis on the necessity for sustainable methodologies, affirming that the state is making significant strides towards the adoption of green technology and the enforcement of more stringent environmental protocols.

Prior to this, Haj. Barde expounded on the perils that climate change portends. These encompassed threats such as flooding, desertification, the diminishing of biodiversity, and an array of other formidable environmental challenges. She articulated the pressing need for comprehensive environmental education at the grassroots level to instigate awareness and instil a culture of sustainable practices.

This landmark event witnessed the attendance of various eminent figures within the government’s echelons. Notable dignitaries included the Secretary to the Government of Taraba State, Chief G. T. Kataps Ngwii, commissioners, permanent secretaries, and a host of other high-ranking government officials. Additionally, numerous unions and non-governmental organisations were also in attendance.

The march succeeded in creating a substantial impact, amplifying the resonance of the climate change discourse and motivating a greater number of individuals to take proactive steps towards forging a sustainable and resilient future.

Observers and experts concur that the Climate Change Awareness March in Taraba State represents a pivotal stride towards ameliorating the adverse effects of climate change on the environment. Such initiatives stand as testament to the state’s unwavering commitment to fortifying the environmental fabric and fostering a collective consciousness regarding the urgency of climate action.

Governor Agbu Kefas Implements Bold Ban on African Rosewood Logging

Recall, in a decisive move this July, Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State took a stand against the logging of African Rosewood, commonly known as Madrid. This resolute action aims to protect the state’s delicate ecosystem from unregulated exploitation and degradation.

The Governor’s directive, conveyed in a statement from Jalingo, the state capital, and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Yusuf Sanda, not only prohibits the felling of these trees but extends to the processing and sale of this highly coveted wood within the state.

“The Executive Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas has imposed an immediate total ban on the felling, processing, and sales of the African Rosewood, popularly called Madrid in the state.

“The Task Force on the Suspension of Mining Activities in Taraba State has been charged with the responsibility of enforcing the ban as one of its terms of reference,” the statement affirmed.

It further mandated the Task Force on the Suspension of Mining Activities in Taraba State to ensure strict compliance.

Governor Kefas earnestly called upon the citizens of the state to collaborate with and support the Task Force in implementing this ban. This united effort is crucial in safeguarding the state’s vulnerable habitat from wanton exploitation and destruction.

Environmentalists have long sounded the alarm about the adverse impact of the extensive African Rosewood logging in Taraba State. Thousands of these trees have fallen in the past eight years, with a significant portion of the proceeds lining private pockets rather than contributing to government revenue.

Concurrently, the state is grappling with the repercussions of the Madrid trade. Rampant windstorms and thunderstorms continue to wreak havoc in various regions, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and property.

Governor Kefas’ resolute stance against the unregulated logging of African Rosewood sets a positive precedent for environmental conservation and sustainable practices in Taraba State. It underscores the imperative of collective action in preserving the state’s natural heritage for future generations.
