Game-Changing ACReSAL Project Combats Climate Crisis in Borno State

In a bid to combat the adverse impacts of climate change, particularly in the face of challenges posed by drought, desertification, and deforestation, the ACReSAL Project, backed by the World Bank, is set to empower communities in Borno State.

This initiative aims to equip them with the necessary skills and resources to effectively mitigate these environmental threats or Climate Crises.

This development was disclosed by Dr Ngare Dogo, Director of the Global Environmental Response Initiative (GERI), during the ongoing sensitization and advocacy tour in Bama Local Government Area. Dr. Dogo further emphasized that the six-year multi-sectoral World Bank-supported project would not only address the pressing Climate Crisis but also elevate the overall livelihoods of the communities.

During the engagement, Dr. Dogo shed light on the objectives and vision of ACReSAL. He stressed the importance of adequate representation to ensure that the communities reap the maximum benefits from the project’s activities in the region.

The commitment of ACReSAL towards community support was underscored, focusing on training, capacity-building, and the provision of interest-free soft loans to boost agricultural endeavours. Additionally, ACReSAL will facilitate market linkages for the produced goods.

In a goodwill message, Mr Ayuba Peter, the Project Coordinator (represented by Bukar Madu Goba, the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer), highlighted how ACReSAL is poised to revolutionize farming activities.

By providing financial support, training, and essential farming inputs, the project aims to transform seasonal farmers into year-round agricultural entrepreneurs. He urged them to establish registered trade associations to facilitate access to loans effectively.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of ACReSAL in curtailing the Climate Crisis, the Shehu of Bama, Umar Kyari Ibn EL-kanemi (represented by Alhaji Barma Adam, the Barma of Bama), expressed gratitude for bringing this significant project to his people. He described it as a dream come true for the community.

The Transition Chairman of Bama, in his welcome address, affirmed that ACReSAL aligns seamlessly with the policy thrust and 10-Point Agenda of Governor Babagana Zulum’s administration, which is dedicated to addressing environmental challenges in the state. He deemed the arrival of ACReSAL as timely and assured of unwavering support from the local populace.

The delegation also paid a visit to the Shehu of Bama Palace, where Dr. Dogo briefed the royal father on the mission of ACReSAL. The Shehu of Bama expressed gratitude for the visit and pledged full support and cooperation towards the successful implementation of the ACReSAL project in the area.
