Police Launch Investigation into Alleged Assault at Home Farm Care Home, Skye

A resident at Home Farm Care Home in Skye, aged 91, has reportedly been subjected to an assault, prompting a thorough police inquiry. Additionally, the Care Inspectorate has reached out to the NHS-operated facility in light of the concerns raised.

NHS Highland took ownership of the Portree care home in 2020 following a distressing period at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic when it was managed by HC-One, during which 11 residents lost their lives.

The health board has refrained from disclosing whether any staff members at the Skye-based Home Farm Care Home have been placed on suspension due to the ongoing police investigation.

Since its transition to NHS management, the care home underwent a single inspection in July 2021, achieving an overall rating of “good” in all evaluated areas.

No formal complaints or enforcement notices have been issued by the Care Inspectorate regarding the facility.

The police have confirmed receipt of a report concerning the alleged assault of the elderly resident on the Home Farm Care Home.

A spokesperson stated, “On September 14, police received a report regarding the assault of a 91-year-old man in the Portree area of Skye. Inquiries are at an early stage.”

A representative from NHS Highland remarked, “Due to the ongoing police investigation, it would be inappropriate for us to make a comment at this time.”

The Care Inspectorate also acknowledged the matter, stating, “We have been notified of this matter and are in close contact with the care service, the provider and partner agencies.”

Families who endured the loss of loved ones at Home Farm during the pandemic are seeking answers through the Scottish Covid-19 Inquiry. They attended the initial hearings in Edinburgh in June, hopeful that valuable insights would be gleaned.

At the peak of the outbreak, 29 residents and 26 staff members tested positive at the care home.

HC-One faced the threat of legal action after an inspection by the Care Inspectorate unearthed “serious and significant concerns.”

In a bid to elevate the standard of care, NHS Highland intervened and subsequently received £900,000 from the Scottish Government for the acquisition of the Portree home.

The community remains vigilant for further developments in this investigation.
