Boosting Agriculture: Borno, Adamawa, Yobe Prep for Dry-Season Farming
Governments in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States are gearing up for irrigation-based dry-season farming to ramp up food production.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has taken proactive steps by deploying 313 tractors to assist rural farmers, alongside providing 100 trucks of fertiliser at a subsidized rate of 25 percent discount. Additionally, 471 ploughs and harrows have been procured to facilitate year-round farming with these tractors. The tractors, allocated one per ward, will offer free services to farmers who will contribute to the fuel costs.
In Yobe State, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Ali Mustapha, reported the provision of 3,000 metric tonnes of fertilisers and agrochemicals for irrigation farming. This initiative covers several Local Government Areas including Bursari, Bade, Jakusko, Fika, Gulani, and Geidam.
Adamawa’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Professor David Jatau, emphasized the government’s dedication to irrigation farming in light of delayed rainfall and recent floods caused by water release from Lagdo Dam. He encouraged dry-season farming, particularly in rice, wheat, and maize production.
Farmers in prominent rice-producing areas like Fufore, Demsa, and Shelleng LGAs echoed the need for government support in exploiting vast underutilized irrigation farmlands for year-round rice cultivation. They emphasized the potential for increased productivity with the right assistance from all levels of government.
