COP28: Surpassing Expectations with 50% Emission Reduction Target

In a resolute gathering focused on climate change, stakeholders rallied behind a collective pledge: to push greenhouse gas emissions toward near-zero levels by the year 2060.

This dedicated commitment was voiced during Nigeria’s Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy validation workshop, a crucial event convened by the National Council on Climate Change and supported by the 2050 Pathways Platform.

Dr. Salisu Dahiru, the Director General of the NCCC, emphasized the workshop’s significance, highlighting its pivotal role in charting Nigeria’s low-emission developmental pathways amidst the formidable challenges posed by climate change.

Central to the discussions was the forthcoming Long-Term Low Emission Strategy document, envisaged as a fundamental support mechanism for Nigeria’s revised 2021 Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement. Dr. Dahiru reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment, aiming to unconditionally slash emissions by 20% before 2030, with a contingent increase to 47%.

“As the Director General of the NCCC, I stand before you to introduce Nigeria’s Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy 2060 for national stakeholder validation.

“In the global context, the urgency to combat climate change and forge a sustainable path for the future has never been more critical. As a nation, we acknowledge the gravity of this challenge and embrace our responsibility to act, innovate, and lead.

“Nigeria’s Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy 2060 stands as a visionary blueprint, a testament to our commitment to transition into a more resilient, green, and inclusive economy.”

“This strategy embodies our pledge to preserve our environment, protect our people, and ensure economic prosperity for generations to come. Within its details lie ambitious targets, innovative solutions, and a collaborative spirit that forms the foundation of our journey.

Dr. Dahiru underscored that Nigeria’s Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy 2060 represents a visionary blueprint, symbolizing the country’s pledge to transition towards a more resilient, eco-friendly, and inclusive economy. Beyond its technicalities, this strategy encapsulates ambitious targets, inventive solutions, and a collaborative ethos, laying the groundwork for a collective journey.

“This isn’t merely a document; it’s our shared vision, encapsulating the aspirations of our youth, the wisdom of our elders, and the dreams of future generations.”

He highlighted that the trajectory towards a sustainable future signifies progress, promising cleaner air, improved health, inclusivity, food security, the creation of green jobs, and enhanced livelihoods for all Nigerians.

Chairman Chris Nkwonta, speaking on behalf of the House Committee on Climate Change, stressed Nigeria’s proactive commitment to transitioning into a net-zero emissions economy by 2050–2060. This strategic move aligns with valid climate studies indicating the imperative need to curtail carbon emissions significantly to combat climate change and mitigate its repercussions.

“Consequently, the NCCC, the National Assembly, and other stakeholders must not deviate from our commitment nor relent in our efforts towards net zero carbon emissions attainment, thereby ensuring a healthier and more sustainable environment for human existence.

“It is my belief that this validation workshop is indeed pivotal to the development of a Competitive and Sustainable Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategy for Nigeria.”

He hailed the validation workshop as a pivotal milestone towards forging a competitive and sustainable long-term low-emissions development strategy for Nigeria, signifying a crucial step in the nation’s commitment to combating climate change.
