Empowering Agriculture: Minister Kyari Launches 2023/2024 Dry Season Farming to Uplift Food Security

The resolute stance taken by the Federal Government in Nigeria towards fortifying the nation’s food security in the face of escalating food inflation is gaining momentum.

In direct response to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s urgent proclamation of a food security emergency earlier this year, a pivotal initiative is underway: the official launch of 2023–2024 dry season farming.

Scheduled for Saturday, November 25th, this groundbreaking event will be conducted under the stewardship of the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, and a constellation of esteemed dignitaries in Hadejia, Jigawa State.

The primary objective of this momentous occasion is the equitable distribution of essential agricultural requisites—seeds, fertilisers, herbicides, and pesticides—to farmers across the nation.

The Federal Government, in a laudable move, is extending a generous 50 percent subsidy on these inputs, aimed at fostering agricultural growth and prosperity.

At the heart of this ambitious agricultural venture lies support from an African Development Bank facility, tactically integrated through the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP) project.

Embracing the prowess of technology, the initiative is set to leverage ICT-driven strategies to pinpoint farmlands, enumerate farmers, register participants, and cluster a staggering 250,000 agricultural enthusiasts.

The reach of this visionary initiative is extensive, encompassing all 36 states of the Federation along with the Federal Capital Territory.

However, the successful execution of dry-season farming hinges significantly on the availability of irrigable land capable of supporting the proposed agricultural venture.

The comprehensive agricultural focus of this season spans a diverse array of crops, including wheat, notably sourced from Mexico, complemented by rice, maize, sorghum, soyabeans, and cassava.

In a bid to instill confidence and assurance among wheat farmers, the Flour Millers Association of Nigeria guarantees a guaranteed off-take of their produce, emblematic of unwavering support within the agricultural sector.

Sen. Kyari reverberates this impending flag-off as a momentous milestone aligned with the nation’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He underscores the critical importance of facilitating access to agricultural inputs and machinery, foreseeing cultivation across an extensive expanse of approximately one hundred and twenty thousand hectares, spanning diverse regions across the country.

The launch of the 2023/2024 dry season farming symbolises Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to fortify food security and elevate agricultural productivity.

This concerted and visionary effort not only addresses immediate concerns surrounding inflation but also lays the foundational groundwork for a resilient, self-sustained agricultural landscape poised to propel the nation towards greater prosperity and stability.
