Unprecedented Growth Surges Inland Fish Production by 2-Fold!

In just nine years, the landscape of inland fish production in India has seen an extraordinary surge, more than doubling to reach a staggering 131 lakh tonnes. Minister Parshottam Rupala, overseeing Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy, underscored this impressive growth during a recent press conference. He credited this remarkable advancement to the concerted efforts of the government, signaling an incredible leap in the sector.

This transformative journey hasn’t gone unnoticed. Minister Rupala proudly announced the upcoming ‘Global Fisheries Conference India 2023’ slated for November 21–22 in Ahmedabad. The conference aims to explore the vast potential and confront the challenges lying ahead in this burgeoning sector. With an anticipated attendance of over 5,000 global participants, the event promises to be a pivotal platform for stakeholders, from seasoned fishermen to dedicated fish farmers.

Reflecting on the achievements since 2014, Minister Rupala highlighted a monumental shift, citing the surge in inland fish production from 61 lakh tonnes to an impressive 161 lakh tonnes. The Modi government’s commitment is evident, with an investment of approximately Rs 38,000 crore over the last nine years, a testament to their unwavering support for the industry.

The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), launched in 2020–21, stands as a significant milestone in this trajectory, representing a substantial leap in funding compared to the cumulative outlay for the sector from 1947 to 2013. Minister Rupala also emphasized the government’s initiatives, such as providing credit cards and insurance schemes for fishermen, highlighting their commitment to the welfare of those integral to the industry.

Joining the chorus, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, L Murugan, emphasised the significance of the forthcoming global conference, coinciding with World Fishery Day on November 21. This event isn’t merely a congregation but a launchpad for industry players and budding start-ups.

In the realm of numbers, the fisheries sector has shown a commendable average growth rate of 8.6 percent over the past nine years, contributing over 1 percent to India’s GDP. Beyond the statistics, the sector’s impact extends deeply into society, providing livelihoods to over 30 million fishers and fish farmers at the grassroots level, along with numerous others across the fisheries value chain.

The global significance of India’s fisheries and aquaculture was underscored by its 2022–23 fiscal year exports, which reached a substantial USD 8.09 billion, primarily driven by frozen shrimp exports amounting to USD 5.48 billion. This substantial contribution speaks volumes about India’s position in the global fishery market and its potential for further growth and development.
