This heralded the start of the green revolution. Norman Ernest Borlaug, a key figure in the Green Revolution, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his efforts to feed the world’s needy.

However, another movement gained traction at the same time: the sustainable agricultural/sustainable farming movement, which was spearheaded by the Land Fellowship, an Ontario-based organization founded in the early 1950s. Despite several academic studies on sustainability issues in the 1950s and 1960s, neither the agricultural establishment nor the general people paid much attention to them. However, there was a slow but consistent increase in interest in the smaller farm community.

CGIAR increased its research to help small, low-income farmers market their crops and feed their communities. In the 1990s, the CGIAR addressed sustainable food security, agriculture, climate resilience, and livelihoods. This paves the path for more sustainable farming practices.

As the globe seeks solutions to a changing climate and limited resources, sustainable farming provides abundant harvests for future generations while protecting our planet’s health.
