Kano Traders Slash Food Prices Amidst Anti-Corruption Commission Intervention

In a landmark development, essential commodity traders in Kano State have taken a bold step to lower the prices of their goods in response to discussions with the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The decision comes on the heels of a decisive move by the commission to seize 10 warehouses containing hoarded food items within the state.

The chairman of the traders, Ibrahim Danyaro, made the announcement following a meeting with the head of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, as reported by The Vanguard.

This development is a significant response to concerns over rising prices and the escalating cost of living, reflecting a commitment by traders to collaborate with the commission to address unjustified price hikes and stockpiling practices.

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, under the leadership of Muhyi Magaji, conducted a thorough raid, revealing substantial quantities of essential items such as spaghetti, rice, pasta, and sugar in the seized warehouses.

Despite the absence of warehouse owners during the operation, the commission took decisive action to curb hoarding and ensure that essential commodities reach the public at fair prices.

Danyaro emphasized that traders have consistently offered goods at prices below those set by manufacturers.

This move is a proactive response to the prevailing concerns about escalating prices and the financial strain on the public.

The traders have pledged cooperation with the commission, aiming to identify and rectify any instances of unjustified price hikes and stockpiling.

“We want to clarify that we do not engage in hoarding. Our efforts will be limited to the current inventory, and our sales prices have not reached the recent manufacturer prices,” stated Danyaro.

He further proposed that the commission engage with manufacturers to understand the underlying reasons behind price increases, expressing readiness to collaborate in lowering prices and providing much-needed relief to the public.

Market leader Hamisu Rabi’u echoed this commitment, affirming the traders’ dedication to maintaining the prices of existing stock consistent with previous rates, despite recent market fluctuations.

Rabi’u provided tangible examples of the traders selling goods at lower prices compared to company rates, demonstrating a genuine willingness to incur losses in order to alleviate the financial burden on the community.

For instance, Rabi’u highlighted that spaghetti, previously sold for N11,500 or N11,700 in the market, is now priced at N12,800 at the manufacturers’.

Similarly, sugar, priced at N72,000 at the company, has been consistently sold by traders for N70,000.

Rice, currently valued at N65,700 at the company, has been sold by traders for between N57,000 and N60,000. This commitment to keeping prices reasonable showcases the traders’ dedication to the welfare of the community.

The move by Kano traders to reduce prices aligns with broader efforts to address economic challenges faced by the public.
