  • Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera declares a state of disaster in 23 out of the country’s 28 districts, highlighting an urgent need for humanitarian aid exceeding $200 million.
  • Approximately 2 million farming households in Malawi have been severely affected by El Nino-induced dry spells, leading to failed crops and widespread food insecurity.
  • The declaration coincides with a food distribution exercise in Neno district, southern Malawi, as the World Food Programme and local authorities work to address the pressing humanitarian crisis.

Malawian President, Lazarus Chakwera, has sounded the alarm, declaring a state of disaster in 23 out of the country’s 28 districts and urging for more than $200 million in humanitarian aid.

The dire situation stems from El Nino-induced dry spells, impacting 2 million farming households and leaving them in urgent need of food assistance.

Chakwera’s announcement comes as the World Food Programme, in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, conducts a food distribution exercise in Neno district, southern Malawi.

Residents like Manes Kanjala, who typically harvests maize from his farmland, are now facing devastating losses due to failed crops caused by scorching sun and erratic rainfall.

Brighton Mphinga, the Disaster Risk Management Officer for Neno district, anticipates a surge in humanitarian assistance following the presidential declaration.

The situation demands urgent action beyond current food distribution efforts, with around 600,000 metric tons of food aid needed to address the widespread hunger crisis.

The “Presidential Initiative to Stop Hunger” calls for a united effort from both local communities and the international community to provide crucial support during this challenging time.
