Federal Government Empowers Borno Small Scale Farmers for Poverty Alleviation

In Brief:

  • The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, is actively addressing poverty in Borno State through the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy.
  • Small-scale farming practitioners received training and inputs during a program in Maiduguri. The initiative aims to uplift rural lives, enhance productivity, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Beneficiaries, including crop, poultry, and fish farmers, expressed gratitude and commitment to utilizing the knowledge and support provided, marking a significant step toward poverty alleviation and agricultural development in the region.

In a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) and the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, small-scale farmers in Borno State have received empowerment through training and inputs under the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS).

The initiative, aimed at uplifting the lives of rural farmers and fostering sustainable agricultural practices, was highlighted during a program in Maiduguri on Wednesday. Mr. Temitope Peter Fadeshemi, the Permanent Secretary of FMAFS, emphasized that the program goes beyond mere agricultural investment; it is an investment in the future of the nation.

“As we equip these farmers with tools to enhance productivity, improve resilience, and embrace sustainable practices, we are laying the foundation for a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector,” stated Fadeshemi, who was represented by Mr. Yau Damagum, the Borno Coordinator of the ministry.

Professor Yusuf Idrisa, a University Don in the Department of Agriculture at the University of Maiduguri, spoke in support of the Federal Government’s initiative, urging states and local governments to emulate this approach in the fight against poverty through agriculture. Idrisa highlighted agriculture’s multiplier effects, stating, “If you empower someone through agriculture, the value chain is endless. It’s the best way to get us out of poverty, insecurity, and the best way to generate employment and income among the people.”

Beneficiaries were encouraged to take the training seriously for maximum benefit. The Director of the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension Service, represented by Bature Mati, emphasized the importance of making good use of the knowledge acquired during the training, with additional cash support to be provided under the program.

The occasion saw the presentation of inputs to 175 crop farmers, 40 poultry farmers, and 28 fish farmers, marking a significant step toward poverty alleviation and sustainable agricultural development in Borno State. As the beneficiaries expressed gratitude, Mohammed Yakubu, a farmer, and Ogwu Peace, trained in poultry, pledged to make good use of the opportunities provided to them.
