UN OCHA Pledges £440 Million for Humanitarian Aid in Nigeria’s BAY States, Fortifying Collective Efforts Amidst Crisis

In a recent gathering hosted at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, the Federal Government of Nigeria emphasized the crucial need for streamlined coordination in humanitarian endeavors. The intent is clear: eradicate redundancy, optimize available resources, and fortify accountability measures.

Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, reiterated this call for collaboration during discussions with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) held on Wednesday.

Central to her address was the insistence that all developmental partners, especially the UN agencies engaged in humanitarian services in Nigeria, align their forthcoming plans for 2024 with the government’s established priorities.

Dr. Edu underscored her commitment to conducting comprehensive humanitarian situation reviews, leveraging interactive dashboards, and executing operations that ensure a unified and efficient response to the nation’s humanitarian dilemmas.

“We must foster collective decision-making. The government ought to take the lead. It’s not about mere information exchange; it’s about planning and executing together. This approach enables mutual accountability for on-ground actions,” asserted Dr. Edu.

Tackling the issue of duplicative functions and services within the humanitarian sphere, the minister declared an end to isolated efforts and stressed the criticality of integration and coordination among all developmental partners within Nigeria.

In a bid to embrace a renewed strategy, Dr. Edu announced the inception of quarterly conventions with developmental partners and agencies actively involved in humanitarian services. These gatherings aim to facilitate meticulous planning and coordination of field activities.

The Minister emphasized the introduction of a dashboard designed to monitor the operations and impacts of all developmental partners. This tool ensures a feedback mechanism through rigorous monitoring and evaluation processes.

Extolling the commendable efforts of UN agencies in Nigeria concerning humanitarian response, Dr. Edu outlined plans for joint field assessments with developmental partners as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Moreover, she urgently appealed for the immediate deployment of humanitarian services to Benue State, highlighting the critical nature of the situation there.

In response to the government’s appeal for collaboration, Sofie Gerde Thomie, the UN OCHA Deputy Director of Operations and Advocacy Division in West and Central Africa, acknowledged the humanitarian agenda set forth by President Tinubu.

Thomie affirmed the UN’s unwavering commitment to comprehending Nigeria’s situation and pledged support to government initiatives addressing humanitarian concerns, particularly in the Bornu, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) States.

Troud Jensen, the Head of Office in Nigeria for UN OCHA, offered insights into the agency’s support for those affected by the humanitarian crisis in the BAY States.

Despite investing $50 million in nutrition and social services, Jensen emphasized the persistent need for humanitarian aid and pledged $440 million in 2024 to alleviate the plight of those affected.

In addition to supporting the Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund, UN OCHA delineated plans for interventions in nutrition, security, climate change, and shelter provision.

The agency reported reaching 3.4 million individuals in the current year by providing nutrition, shelter, and water facilities.

The joint commitment from the Federal Government and UN OCHA signifies a united effort to amplify the efficiency and impact of humanitarian responses in Nigeria, with particular attention directed towards the BAY states.
