Anticipated Weather Trends by Met Éireann for Farming – Met Éireann

Met Éireann’s recent farming forecast indicates that the upcoming week will witness rainfall levels soaring “above average” throughout Ireland. The focal points for this heightened precipitation are slated to be the northern and southwestern regions, as per the national meteorological service.

A noteworthy concern highlighted by Met Éireann pertains to the “far southwest,” where an estimated rainfall accumulation of approximately 1.5 times the norm is anticipated, signaling potentially challenging conditions for farmers in this area.

Despite this forecast, according to AgriLand, a silver lining emerges with the promise of intermittent dry spells and sunny interludes, especially in the south-eastern parts of the country. These remedies, albeit limited, may offer some relief by facilitating a certain degree of drying.

In elucidating the week ahead, Met Éireann foresees intermittent showers or prolonged periods of rain, urging preparedness among agricultural stakeholders for such weather fluctuations.

For optimal agricultural activities such as spraying, early Friday emerges as the opportune time, as Met Éireann forecasts a favourable combination of dry weather coupled with light to moderate winds.

Temperature-wise, the air is expected to hover between 8° and 11° Celsius, while soil temperatures remain notably higher than usual, ranging between 7.0° and 9.7° Celsius.

Reflecting on the past week, the northern part of the country experienced slightly lower air temperatures compared to the southern regions, which observed temperatures slightly above the average range. The extremities of mean values ranged between 6.8° and 10° in the far south.

Regarding precipitation, the meteorological service notes that rainfall measurements exceeded the average over the past week.

Connacht particularly bore witness to substantial rainfall, with Mayo recording over 76mm, equivalent to a staggering 245% of the usual volume. In contrast, Casement Aerodrome experienced drier conditions, registering only 15.3mm of rainfall.

As for sunshine hours, the recent seven-day span depicted an abundance of sunlight, especially in the north-west of Connacht, where over 23 hours of sunshine were recorded—equivalent to a remarkable 192% of the average duration. Conversely, the midlands reported the lowest sunshine hours at a mere 12 hours.

Looking ahead, Met Éireann foresees a foreseeable dip in sunshine levels for November, accompanied by a blend of sunny intervals and prolonged rainy spells on most days throughout the week.

This forecast underscores the need for agricultural planning that accommodates varying weather patterns, balancing periods of sunshine with expected bouts of rainfall.
