Fond Farewell: Cologne Zoo Bids Adieu to Beloved Tapir, Ailton

Cologne Zoo, nestled in the heart of western Germany, is grieving the loss of one of its most cherished inhabitants, Ailton, a 17-year-old lowland tapir.

Ailton, a beloved member of the zoo’s family, battled significant health challenges in recent times, receiving dedicated care from our veterinary team for the past three weeks. Despite initial signs of improvement, his condition took a sharp downturn this week, prompting a difficult decision.

“He was treated intensively by our veterinary staff for the last three weeks.

“Although his condition initially improved, his health became much worse on Tuesday. After careful joint consideration and exhaustion of all treatment options, we ultimately had to euthanise him to spare him further suffering.

“Rest in peace,” expressed the zoo spokesperson.

The lowland tapir, a herbivorous mammal indigenous to South America, bears a striking resemblance to a pig.

Ailton, born at Hamburg’s Hagenbeck Zoo, had been a resident of Cologne since 2008, capturing the hearts of both visitors and caretakers alike.

As news of Ailton’s passing spread, an outpouring of grief and remembrance swept through the community.

A dedicated follower of the zoo’s Facebook page expressed,

“I knew you from a young age, take care Ailton. I will never forget you.”

Another shared,

“You often made me laugh and gave me a lot of joy.”

Ailton’s memory will endure in the hearts of those who knew him, leaving an indelible mark on Cologne Zoo’s legacy.
