Optimal Transition Cow Management for Successful Autumn Calving

The crucial period of transition for dairy cows, spanning three weeks before and after calving, plays a pivotal role in ensuring a successful calving period and subsequent lactation. In this article, we delve into the imperative steps to get the transition cow management right, particularly during the autumn calving season.

Preventing Production-Related Diseases:

During this critical phase, dairy cows encounter various physiological challenges. However, strategic supplementation of essential minerals pre-calving proves to be a potent preventive measure against production-related diseases. It is far more effective to adopt a proactive approach rather than dealing with issues after they arise.

The Impact of Proper Nutrition:

Cows afflicted with milk fever face an eight-fold increased likelihood of developing mastitis in early lactation. Furthermore, a negative energy balance in late pregnancy elevates the risk of a displaced abomasum (LDA) during lactation. To mitigate these risks, it is imperative to maintain low dietary calcium levels leading up to calving. Keeping calcium levels below 0.5% of dry matter (DM) significantly reduces the incidence of milk fever.

Critical Mineral Specification:

When it comes to mineral composition, the following key points should be noted:

  • Low calcium (<1.1%)
  • 20-25% magnesium
  • 2-5% phosphorus (increase feed rate if forage P content is low)
  • Vitamin D – at least 12,000 units/100g
  • Trace minerals – copper, zinc, selenium, manganese, iodine, and cobalt, with protected sources included where necessary.

Typically, minerals are administered at a rate of 120g/cow/day. For those applying minerals on silage, it is advisable to do so twice a day with 60g for optimal results.

Mitigating Calving Season Challenges:

While encountering some issues during the calving season is almost inevitable, taking proactive steps to mitigate risks will substantially reduce both their frequency and severity.

Vital Role of Body Condition Score (BCS) Monitoring:

Monitoring the Body Condition Score (BCS) in the lead-up to calving is of paramount importance, even though rectifying it may prove challenging. It is imperative for BCS to be within the optimal range several months prior to calving. Cows with a BCS that is either too low or too high require vigilant monitoring. These cows, often referred to as problem cows, are more susceptible to complications during and after calving.

Mastering the art of transition cow management is the linchpin to a successful autumn calving season. Through strategic mineral supplementation, prudent nutritional practices, and vigilant BCS monitoring, farmers can significantly enhance the well-being and productivity of their dairy herd during this critical period. Remember, a proactive approach paves the way for a smoother calving season and a more productive lactation phase.
