The Overview of the John Templeton Foundation Grant
The John Templeton Foundation funds research and sparks debates that leave people in awe and wonder. Our funding areas define our philanthropic objectives and help us achieve our goal of becoming a global catalyst for discoveries that promote human flourishing. We invite funding applications to fund field-leading research and high-impact public engagement initiatives in these areas.
Funding areas:
Individual Freedom & Free Markets: This funding area promotes teaching, research, and outreach projects that promote individual liberty, free markets, free competition, and entrepreneurship.
biological Sciences: The Life Sciences funding category supports projects that seek new and basic insights into the meaning and significance of biological processes, allowing us to grasp humanity’s place in nature better.
Mathematical and Physical Sciences: We finance research that aims to shed insight into the underlying ideas of physical reality. We also investigate the relationship between these sciences and the larger human experience.
Religion, Science, and Society: The Religion, Science, and Society funding area aims to increase our collective understanding of how religious and spiritual beliefs and practices influence human flourishing, as well as to apply those discoveries to society in meaningful and practical ways.
Character Virtue Development: The Character Virtue Development funding area promotes research and conversations that aim to advance the science and practice of character, with a particular emphasis on moral, performance, civic, and intellectual virtues such as humility, gratitude, curiosity, diligence, and honesty.
Public Engagement: This funding area covers content projects such as video, audio, public events, and printed media. Furthermore, we are looking for concepts that will help to develop the next generation of thought leaders and provide long-term courses and programming at top universities.
The Foundation provides grants to support research and public engagement in our primary funding areas. We invest in big ideas from unconventional thinkers—ideas that transcend disciplinary borders and challenge traditional wisdom. We also finance innovative projects that engage the public with these ideas to broaden perspectives, enhance understanding, and spark curiosity.
