AgriFood Funding Program Overview
Apply today for the Sustainable-CAP Agri Food Funding Program.
The federal/territorial Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership (Sustainable-CAP) will fund agriculture-based initiatives to improve the competitiveness, innovation, and resilience of the agriculture, agri-food, and agri-based products sectors.
The GNWT State Department of Industry, Tourism, and Investment provides sustainable CP funding in the NWT.
AgriFood Funding Program Streams
- Applicant Stream 1: Commercial Producers, Processors, Harvesters, and Other Agribusinesses (Including Indigenous-owned businesses)
- Must be a registered business in the NWT that has been in existence for at least one year. Registration or incorporation under the applicable legislation is necessary.
- Before funding can be approved, projects may require the filing of a business plan.
- Unless otherwise specified, funding will cover up to 75% of project expenditures, with a maximum program lifetime value of $125,000.
- Major Agricultural Projects may be eligible for up to 75% funding, up to a maximum of $250,000, based on a third-party business plan examination.
- Application Stream 2: New Entrants and Small Businesses
- New entrants and small enterprises are eligible for a maximum of $30,000 in assistance across two periods.
- Phase 1: Up to $10,000 (total) for activities such as initial start-up costs, business planning, training, and the development of agri-environmental plans.
- Phase 2: Following the development of a business plan, up to $20,000 in further funds will be provided to implement the key components outlined in the plan.

The Agri Food Funding Program Eligibility
NWT producers, processors, merchants, non-profit organizations, and governments, including Indigenous Governments and Indigenous Organizations, are all eligible to receive Sustainable-CAP NWT financing.
Individuals must:
- Be a current resident of the Northwest Territories for at least one year, and be at least 19 years old.
- Businesses should be:
- Based and functioning in the Northwest Territories for at least a year.
- An agricultural producer or agrifood processor
- A corporation, partnership, or sole proprietorship that is registered and in good standing with the Department of Justice’s Legal Registries Division
- Operating a farm or processing plant with commercial sales, or being able to demonstrate current/future commercial viability (a business plan is required).
- The nonprofit organizations must be:
- Registered as a northern-based non-profit society organization with the Northwest Territories Registrar of Societies.
Ineligible Criteria
Funds cannot be allocated for:
- Used GNWT-funded equipment for the past five years.
- Unless otherwise noted, beneficiaries incur normal and ongoing operation and maintenance costs.
- Purchase of common equipment with numerous applications (e.g., digital cameras, GPS, smartphones, measuring tapes, trucks, trailers, and tractors).
- Purchase and build multi-purpose structures (barns, storage sheds). Specialized interior components of agricultural buildings may be eligible for funding.
- Land purchase or road development.
