Despite the global commitment to eradicating violence against children, the prevalence of childhood sexual violence (CSV) remains a critical issue worldwide. Efforts to combat this problem often struggle to align with the everyday experiences of affected children and youth, leading to underreporting due to gaps in local protection systems, law enforcement, and pervasive social stigmas. Recognizing the need for a more nuanced and effective approach, Ignite Philanthropy, in collaboration with the Human Dignity Foundation, Oak Foundation, and Wellspring Philanthropic Fund, introduces the Thrive Together grantmaking and capacity strengthening program.
Thrive Together Overview:
Thrive Together is a proactive program aimed at addressing CSV by empowering individuals with lived experience and their allies to confront the root causes of this violence. Through this initiative, Ignite Philanthropy seeks to invest in organizations, strengthening their collective and individual capacities, expanding their connections to the broader movement against sexual violence, and removing obstacles hindering their impact.
Program Objectives:
- Financial Support: The program offers flexible one-year grants of up to $20,000, with the possibility of a no-cost extension for up to two years if needed.
- Flexible Utilization: Organizations focused on lived experience can use the funds as they see fit, aligning with the program’s principles, which prioritize an informed understanding of local CSV needs, effective strengthening of collective efforts, willingness to share insights, and a commitment to safety and care for all involved.
- Capacity Building: Beyond financial support, the program aims to enhance organizational capacities, foster learning opportunities, and facilitate connections within the global CSV field.
Eligibility Criteria:
Thrive Together welcomes applications from both registered and non-registered organizations actively engaged in preventing or combating childhood sexual violence. Non-registered organizations will be funded through registered partners. Eligible organizations include self-organized, non-registered entities consisting of at least three people or civil society organizations making collective decisions. Additionally, non-registered groups or organizations led or co-led by individuals with lived experience of CSV are encouraged to apply.
Geographic Focus:
While recognizing the global impact of CSV, the program, in its first edition, prioritizes regions with limited funding opportunities for addressing these challenges. The program is open to organizations in the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Eastern Europe.
Application Process:
Interested collectives can apply online or submit a filled-out Word document form to applications@ignitephilanthropy.org by the end of the day (23:59 CET) on October 22nd. The application process involves several key steps:
- Administrative Check (November): Ignite’s team will conduct an initial administrative check to ensure alignment with the program’s geographic scope and eligibility criteria.
- Verification of Administrative Check (November): With the assistance of the Lived Experience Advisors Panel (LEAP), Ignite will verify the administrative check before proceeding with the decision-making process.
- Deliberation and Consensus (December): LEAP members will review applications, engaging in deliberation to select ten organizations for funding.
- Communication of Decision (December): Ignite staff will contact organizations to communicate decisions and request due diligence information and documents for review (December/January 2024).
- Final Decision and Payment Process (January 2024): Finalists passing the due diligence check will receive the final decision and details of the payment process.
- Grant Implementation (January 2024): The grants are estimated to start in January 2024, with a duration of one year from the start date.
Timelines are subject to change based on application volume and unforeseen external factors.
Ignite Philanthropy’s Thrive Together program represents a pivotal step towards empowering those with lived experience and their allies to actively contribute to ending childhood sexual violence. By providing financial support, fostering capacity building, and facilitating connections within the global movement, Ignite aims to create a lasting impact on the organizations and communities striving to eliminate this pervasive issue. Through the collective efforts of those directly affected by CSV, we can aspire to build a safer and more secure world for children and youth.
