The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Zambia invites non-profit and for-profit organizations to participate in the Local Climate Action Innovation Annual Program Statement (LCAI APS). This initiative aims to inspire fresh and inventive ideas, along with new collaborations, to bring about lasting, measurable advancements in development outcomes. USAID/Zambia welcomes a diverse range of approaches to achieve its development goals, demonstrating a willingness to explore innovative strategies.

The Zambia LCAI APS endeavors to establish deeper connections between USAID and emerging grassroots, community-based, and private sector organizations. The goal is to endorse climate-smart innovations, placing a special emphasis on locally-driven, locally-conceived, and forward-thinking concepts that involve both the private sector and communities in eco-friendly economic growth.

Key Focus Areas

  1. Climate: Proposed programs should concentrate on climate-positive actions supporting adaptation, mitigation, and enhanced resilience of rural communities and businesses. The engagement methods are diverse, ranging from technological solutions to collaborations within the agriculture sector, and interventions related to financing.
  2. Gender Equality: Initiatives may target efforts to bridge gender disparities in terms of income, workforce participation, and access to vital resources like land and credit. Women and marginalized groups play crucial roles in inclusive economic growth, and their involvement is essential for poverty reduction. Recognizing women’s distinctive skills and knowledge in addressing local needs and climate-related challenges is pivotal.
  3. Cost-Sharing: USAID/Zambia encourages applicants to demonstrate commitment by contributing their resources to complement the requested USAID funding. While not mandatory, cost-sharing signifies a strong ownership of the proposed idea/program.
  4. Risk-Taking: Acknowledging that innovation and risk often go hand in hand, USAID/Zambia encourages high-risk, high-reward ideas/programs that are well-conceived and transformative.

Funding Information

The total funding allocated under this APS will be determined by the quantity and caliber of proposals received by USAID/Zambia, estimated at approximately $250,000 USD. The agency anticipates awarding up to 10 Fixed Amount Awards, with individual awards not expected to exceed $50,000. The mission remains open to innovative ideas that may necessitate higher funding. Grantees will have up to one year to implement and demonstrate the success of their projects, with a maximum project duration of 12 months.

Geographic Scope

Proposed programs can be located anywhere within Zambia.

Eligibility Criteria

USAID invites local entities that have received less than $250,000 of USAID assistance in the past five years, which includes those that have not received any USAID assistance during this period. A “local entity” must meet the following criteria:
